Yveltal
In-Game Location: Team Flare HQ: (One at Level 50)
Stats:
HP: 126
Attack: 131
Defense: 95
Special Attack: 131
Special Defense: 98
Speed: 99
Base Stat Total: 680
Personal Pokemon Description:
Yveltal right off the bat was put under a microscope due to its unique typing for a legendary and its unique moves. Yveltal has four things going for it. Its ability to function as a solid mixed attacker in ubers along with its ability Dark Aura boosting its STAB Dark Pulse up to even more powerful levels, its 99 speed tier, which is four higher than most of the powerful ubers, its STAB + Aura boosted priority Sucker Punch which is the strongest priority in the game, even ahead of Extremekiller Arceus and finally, Oblivion Wing, a STAB flying move with 80 BP that functions as a more powerful Drain Punch. There are two major problems with Yveltal that threatens its usability in ubers however. While 99 speed is a blessing in ubers, it's still woefully short of some of Yveltal's possible counters. Also while Yveltal's defenses are strong, they are still mediocre by uber standards. However, all of its strengths outweigh its weaknesses and allow it to take out some of Ubers most powerful contenders, such as Mega Mewtwo Y, Deoxys, Giritina, Lugia, and so on.
Set #1: Priority Life Orb
EVs: 4 HP, 252 Atk, 252 Spe
Ability: Dark Aura
Nature: Adamant ( + Atk, - SpAtk )
Item: Life Orb
Moveset:
Sucker Punch
Dragon Claw / Dragon Rush
Rock Slide / Fly
U-Turn
Set Explanation: This is a powerful set. Yveltal has the strongest priority in the game. Sucker Punch has 80 BP, which is boosted by STAB thanks to Yveltal's Dark typing and further boosted by Dark Aura. Sucker Punch will OHKO almost anything that doesn't resist it after SR damage. Dragon Claw is for coverage against Pokemon that would come in to ruin Yveltal's day. Dragon Rush is another alternative for more power at the cost of accuracy. Rock Slide is a nasty surprise for nailing Ho-oh, although you could use Fly instead for another STAB move, however you'll find Fly more often than not is rather useless except in niche situations. U-Turn is a good prediction tool and will nail select switch-ins for serious damage.
Set #2: Tank Special Attacker
EVs: 252 HP, 252 SpAtk, 4 Spe
Ability: Dark Aura
Nature: Modest ( + SpAtk, - Atk )
Item: Leftovers
Moveset:
Dark Pulse
Oblivion Wing
Focus Blast
Substitute / Protect / Roost
Set Explanation: A somewhat interesting set that makes use of Yveltal's somewhat tank-like qualities. What Yveltal lacks in base defensive stats he makes up for with a solid HP stat and movepool. Dark Pulse is boosted by STAB and Dark Aura so it will be your main attacking choice most of the time. Oblivion Wing is another STAB move that also restores Yveltal's HP, and will come in handy and be a nasty surprise to multiple pokemon. Focus Blast gives Yveltal some much needed coverage against Pokemon such as Dialga, Ferrothorn and such. The last slot is a toss up based on your individual needs. Substitute is good for preventing crippling status, Protect is good for scouting. Roost is a very useful move for extra recovering, which can help you if you're losing a stall war.
Counters: Ferrothorn is easily one of Yveltal's best counters, tanking anything that Yveltal can throw at it while setting up in it's face, it must be wary of Focus Blast and Dark Pulse however. Dialga while being weak to Focus Blast can hit it with its powerful STAB attacks or another super effective move. Any Pokemon that is faster than Yveltal that isn't weak to Sucker Punch will have no problem taking it out. Darkrai can use Dark Void and Nasty Plot to cripple and take out Yveltal. Steel types no longer resist Dark and thus are not able to just blatantly wall Yveltal. Anything that resists Dark Type generally has a good chance against Yveltal.
